AGAVE

I came upon this plant in a botanical garden on the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Though it was starting to rain, and I hesitated at first to take out my camera, the spectacular beauty of this particular specimen prevailed over my fears. Its lush details remind me of giant striped candy.

Agave americana, also known as Century Plant, is a native of tropical America. The plants have a large rosette of thick fleshy leaves, each ending generally in a sharp point and with a spiny margin; the stout stem is usually short, the leaves apparently springing from the root. In the variegated forms the leaf has a white or yellow marginal or central stripe from base to apex.
